Project Overview

GPS Cargo Handling Ltd was contracted to LLS a 20.7-tonne steel cable reel in guage on the width and shunt loaded flat rack to London Gateway Port. The Cargo is classified as out-of-gauge due to it's diameter, this cargo required specialist lifting equipment and a bespoke lashing plan approved by the shipping line.

Our team executed the full scope in a single shift: crane lift from the delivery trailer, precision placement on a 20ft flat rack, and full lashing with timber dunnage and lashings rated to exceed IMO CSS Code requirements.

Challenge · Solution · Result

Challenge

The reel's 20.7T weight and 2.8m diameter meant standard flat rack twist locks were insufficient. The cargo also had to meet a strict vessel cut-off, leaving a short window for the complete load, lash and inspection process.

Solution

GPS Cargo deployed a 44-tonne capacity reach stacker with a custom spreader bar. Timber cradles were pre-cut to cradle the reel's curved base, spreading the weight. A GPS supervisor signed off the lashing plan before the flat rack was trucked to the vessel.

Result

Loaded, lashed, secured and documented within a short amount of time ahead of the vessel cut-off. Zero cargo damage, Lashing inspection passed first time. Client received full photographic evidence pack and the cargo arrived at destination without incident.
